UPI Lite

The UPI Lite is an app launched by the government of India to enable offline UPI payments. Due to Covid 19, we have seen an increase in online transactions using UPI. Several transactions are being processed through UPI. Let us read on to find out why UPI Lite was launched and more about the app.

What is the Impact of UPI Payments?

The UPI has taken over conventional payment methods including NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer), IMPS (Immediate Payment Service), and RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement). This has changed the way real-time payments are being made in India.

According to the data given by the National Payments Corporation(NPCI), around 6 billion transactions were processed through UPI in July 2022, which is the highest since 2016. It was reported that Rs. 84.15 Lakh crore worth of transactions were done by UPI in 2021 and 2022. The value is five times the amount which is processed through debit card and credit cards in total.

Why was the UPI Lite Introduced?

Several UPI transactions are being done every day. So, people are facing lower transaction processes and technical malfunctions. The rejection rates have been higher than usual in the past few months. To decrease these failure rates and boost the functioning of UPI payments, NPCI introduced UPI Lite.

What Is UPI Lite?

The UPI Lite is an on-device wallet feature that will enable users to make real time small value payments without using an UPI PIN.

How Does UPI Lite Work?

You have to first load money into the wallet on UPI Lite from the bank account. Then, you can make payments from the wallet through UPI Lite.

Who Can Use UPI Lite?

UPI Lite has been enabled on the BHIM app. Currently, 8 banks can use UPI Lite via the BHIM app. These banks are Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Indian Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank.

Value of Transactions Carried Out Using UPI Lite

UPI Lite is used to carry out transactions of low value denominations. UPI Lite allows transactions which are under Rs. 200 only. The current phase of UPI Lite allows only debit of money and not credit. So, you can make payments using this app but you cannot transfer money. You can pay offline as well.

What Is UPI Lite App Balance?

Users can add up to Rs. 2000 to the UPI Lite app balance at any point of time. You need a stable internet connection to update the app balance although payments can be made offline.

How to Track The UPI Lite Transaction History?

Except for top-ups, no UPI Lite transaction will go into passbooks or bank account statements. So, then how does one track the UPI Lite transaction history? You will get an SMS summarizing the transactions done during the day using UPI Lite.

To view the transaction history, Go to Open app -> home screen -> view transaction history

An SMS summarizing the list of transactions done during the day will be sent from the bank to your mobile.

How to Activate The UPI Lite in BHIM App?

Step 1: Download the BHIM app from Play Store or App Store.

Step 2: Open the app and login

Step 3: Add the details of the bank if the bank account is not linked or set up.

Step 4: Scroll down in the app and click on the UPI Lite.

Step 5: Go through the details and tap on the 'Enable Now' button to turn on UPI Lite.

Step 6: Now, you can load up to Rs. 2000 to the on-device wallet.

Step 7: Choose the bank account and add the money to your wallet.

Step 8: Tap on ‘Enable’ UPI Lite.

Step 9: Enter your UPI PIN. Your UPI Lite e-wallet will be activated now.

In Summary

The UPI Lite enables easier and smoother functioning of UPI payments. It does not require a PIN and you can process payments offline as well.

Yes, it is safe to use UPI Lite. This is because even though there is no UPI PIN, the BHIM app asks you to enter a PIN or a fingerprint to access the app.

You can send money more than 10 times per day across all UPI apps.
