Generating and activating your ATM PIN is very important. PINs are 4-digit numbers that help prevent unauthorized users from accessing your account through ATMs. All transactions whether withdrawals, online transactions, or point-of-sale transactions will happen only after typing the ATM PIN.
Earlier SBI used to send mails with scratch-off panels hiding the PIN. But, now they have come up with the concept of Green PIN, which helps customers generate a new PIN or make changes to their existing PIN with convenience and ease. The Green PIN is not the actual PIN. Once you get this PIN on your mobile number, you can use it to generate the actual PIN. Let us now read about the various methods used to generate the SBI ATM PIN.
Go to an SBI ATM after you have got your SBI ATM cum debit card. Implement the generation of SBI Green PIN by following the steps given below:
Step 1: Place your debit card into the ATM card slot.
Step 2: Choose ‘PIN Generation’.
Step 3: You will be asked to input your 11 digit account number.
Step 4: Type the same using the keypad and click ‘Confirm’.
Step 5: You will be prompted to enter your registered mobile number
Step 6: Enter the same, and press ‘Confirm’
Step 7: The next screen will display the message, ‘Your green PIN will be shortly delivered to your registered mobile number’ if the details entered by you are correct.
Step 8: Click 'Confirm' and another message that states 'Your Green PIN generation has been successful will be sent to your mobile number’.
Now, the Green PIN will be sent to your mobile phone as an OTP. Using this, you can now create the actual PIN. Take out and insert your ATM card again. Here are the steps to create the actual SBI ATM PIN
Step 1: Insert the SBI Card into the ATM
Step 2: Choose ‘Banking’
Step 3: Select the language. You can choose either English, Hindi, or any regional language from the options given.
Step 4: On the subsequent screen, enter the OTP received on your registered mobile.
Step 5: Select ‘PIN Change’ from the ‘Select Transaction’ menu
Step 6: Form a new 4-digit PIN of your choice and enter the same. Reconfirm
Step 7: Once successful, you will see a message, ‘Your PIN has been changed successfully’
The actual PIN is now generated and it can be used for all card transactions at retail terminals, ATMs, and online.
You can also generate the Green PIN by sending an SMS from the registered mobile number.

Since the time banks started, they have been sending PINs through PIN mailers. Here, the PIN number is covered by scratch-off panels and sent to the cardholder’s address through postal or courier service. Lately, some banks have been giving the PIN directly to the customer through the welcome kit. But in this case, if the customer wants to change the PIN, then, he or she should go to the bank and raise a regeneration request.
Sending the ATM PIN through mailers has some difficulties like physical custody of the PIN mailers by bank employees, delays in postal or courier delivery, damage or hacking of PIN during transit, postal and stationary charges for the banks etc. If the PIN gets damaged or tampered with, then banks have to send a new PIN. This increases charges for them. Also, employees have to go physically to the bank if they have to change their PINs. All these are quite cumbersome. So, SBI has come up with a digital way to generate the ATM PIN, and this is called the Green PIN initiative. It is a step towards paperless banking and saves time and energy.
Step 1: Go to the app store and download the SBI quick application
Step 2: Click on the ATM cum debit card option.
Step 4: In the next step, you will be asked to fill two options namely - The last 4 digits of your debit card and the last 4 digits of your account number.
Step 5: Fill in the requested credentials and click submit.
Step 6: Now, you will be taken to your inbox, and this will show you the sender’s number automatically.
Step 7: Here, you can send an SMS to 567676 to generate the Green PIN.Simply include the final four digits of either your account number or debit card, and forward it. Make sure that you have sent the SMS from the mobile number registered with SBI.
Step 8: You will get an OTP from the bank, and this is your Green PIN. The validity period for the number extends for 24 hours. You can alter this PIN by going to the nearest ATM within 24 hours.
Step 1: Go to the nearest SBI ATM and insert your ATM card.
Step 2: Choose your preferred language
Step 3: Next, choose ‘PIN Generation’
Step 4: Enter the 11 digit account number and the mobile number registered with the bank.
Step 5: Click on ‘Confirm’
Step 6: Once the system verifies your details, the green PIN will be sent to your registered mobile number.
Step 7: Next, enter the PIN that you wish to set for your ATM card. After you change the PIN, you will be able to do further transactions.
