Digitization is an aftermath of demonetization, one of the core objectives of demonetization was to transform India into a cashless economy. While this was achieved to some extent, the basic premise which allowed creation of a digitized economy was the issuance of plastic cards. While both debit and credit cards have been around for long, they are being used to their optimal potential with the advent of online shopping and ATM centers. Debit cards have increased the accessibility to cash in savings / current accounts manifold. They have also lightened the wallets for individuals, given that they promote not carrying cash.
About Punjab National Bank Debit Card
Debit card is a plastic card which provides access to cash held in the account. Debit card can be used at the respective bank’s ATM. The card holder can conduct cash withdrawals, balance enquires and extract mini statement. The debit card also provides the privilege of making online payments for purchases across various merchant outlets. The amount will be debited from the cardholder’s savings account or current account. Using the debit card at the ATM, the cardholder can transfer funds through ATM to another self-account or any other PNB account. The account holder can also transfer / receive funds to / from any Mastercard / Maestro card holder of other selected banks.
The bank is currently issuing the below types of debit cards –
PIN based Debit Card
PIN stands for personal identification number which is a unique 4-digit number that allows one to access the bank account through debit card or ATMs. The PIN is kept confidential.
Signature based Classic Debit card
This has the customer’s signature on the back of the card, the customer has to sign the invoice every-time the card is swiped. Typically, the merchant has to verify the signature to ensure it matches with the sign on the back of the debit card.
Signature based Gold Debit card with photo
This is a signature-based card which is personalized with the photo of the account holder. The merchant can verify the owner by means of the photo. It is an additional personalization effort by PNB.
PNB Platinum Debit Card – There are two variants in this – RuPay and Master Card. This debit card also provides accidental and disability insurance for the card holder.
Platinum Debit Card
There are two variants under this card such as RuPay and Master. The cash withdrawal limit per day is restricted to Rs. 50,000. The cash withdrawal limit for one time is restricted to Rs. 15,000. The E-com / Point of sale consolidated limit is Rs. 1.25 Lakh. The accidental/disability insurance provides cover to the extent of Rs.2 Lakh.
Classic Debit Card
There are two variants under Classic Debit Card such as RuPay and Master. Personalized and Non Personalized debit card can be issued. The cash withdrawal limit per day is restricted to Rs. 25,000. The cash withdrawal limit for one time is restricted to Rs. 15,000. The E-com / Point of sale consolidated limit is Rs.60,000. The accidental / disability insurance provides cover to the extent of Rs. 50,000.

Bank has launched RuPay EMV chip-based debit card especially for customers who visit overseas. The card has an extra security feature which ensures that there is no fraudulent transaction conducted due to misplacement or loss of card.

(1) How to apply for debit card from Punjab National Bank?
Debit card can be obtained from any CBS branch of PNB (irrespective of account maintaining branch) by filling a debit card application form. In case of Non-Personalized card (without name) the card would be issued instantly. In case of Personalized card (with name) the card would be issued in 7-8 working days.
(2) What is the customer care contact that one should reach out to for debit card related queries?
1800 180 2222 (Toll free) number is available 24 X7 for all debit card related issues. Incase, of loss of debit card, the cardholder can de-activate or hot-list the card.
(3) How does the debit card work?
Insert your debit card in ATM and follow the instructions displayed on the screen. On POS the cardholder has to swipe the card and sign the bill after verifying the amount.
