India is one of the youngest countries in the world, with the majority of its population in the age group of 25 to 45 years. The rate of increase of population in India is also high as compared to other developed nations. However, this population explosion is a double edged sword and a majority of our population still belongs to the lower middle class or the economically weaker sections of the society. The major brunt of these conditions is faced by women and children of our country who face malnutrition or undernutrition on account of lack of employment opportunities or funds to sustain their nourishment needs.
The Government of India has therefore come out with a welfare scheme especially targeting first-time mothers with an aim to provide them with monetary incentive so they can get proper nourishment during their pregnancy as well as proper rest before and after the birth of their first child.
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana was launched by the central government in 2017. This scheme was launched pan India for the benefit of all first time mothers and eventually their babies. Given below are the details of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
About Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana
India constitutes a large percentage of undernourished women in the world. An undernourished woman has a higher chance of giving birth to an underweight child. Women often have to work till the very end of their pregnancy and again join the office soon enough after their delivery. There are many reasons for this, one of the main being the lack of equal employment opportunities for women post childbirth if the woman takes a longer break from work. This takes a toll on the health of the mothers and the children as well as they do not get the required minimum six months of nourishment through breastfeed. The scheme was thus launched with the following objectives.
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana provides cash incentives to all expecting and lactating mothers. The target beneficiaries under the scheme are the explained below.
