Indian tax-paying residents are required to hold a PAN Number, or the Permanent Account Number. It is a legal tax identification number that helps the government keep track of your income, tax, assets and liabilities, and more. Individuals, HUFs, and business entities are all required to obtain a PAN card.
There are 2 entities that process and issue PAN card to individuals – e-NSDL (currently Protean) and UTIISL.
Applicants can apply for a PAN card both online and offline. Click here for detailed instructions here. When applicants submit their PAN card application, they are given an acknowledgement receipt or acknowledgement slip, and it will have the PAN Card Acknowledgement Number printed on it.
When you apply with NSDL, it is a 15-digit number, and with UTIISL, it is a 9-digit number called the Coupon Code.
Since the PAN card application process takes time, if applicants want to tract the status of their application, they need this PAN card acknowledgement number to do it.
- On the acknowledgement slip generated once you submit your PAN application.
- On the acknowledgement slip sent to you via email or SMS once the PAN card application process is completed.
- On the acknowledgement slip or receipt you receive from the PAN card agent when you submit the application physically at any of the authorized PAN application centres across India.
