A PAN card (Permanent Account Number) is issued to every tax-paying citizen of India. It is a Unique Identification Number that is made up of both letters and numbers. Individuals, companies, and all other tax-paying entities are required to have a PAN card issued in their name.

A PAN card is also an important document for opening bank documents, doing financial transactions, making investments, etc.

However, the process of applying for a PAN Card for minors is different from applying for a PAN Card for adults.

Let’s have a look at how to apply for a PAN card for minors, the documents required for it, and the benefits of having a PAN card for minors. We’ll also see how you can get the PAN card updated when the minor becomes an adult.

Benefits of Having a PAN Card for Minors

A PAN card, even for a minor (someone under 18), can be a handy tool for their financial future. Here's how:

  • Investing for their future: Want to start investing in things like stocks or mutual funds for your child's education or future? A PAN card is needed to put these investments under their name.
  • Being a nominee: Maybe you want your child to inherit some property or investments one day. To make them a nominee (someone who receives something after you), they'll need a PAN card.
  • Opening a bank account: Planning a bank account for your child to learn about saving? Some banks might ask for a PAN card for minors.
  • Keeping track from an early age: A PAN card number stays with a person their whole life. Getting one for your child early on means one less thing to worry about later.

How to Apply for a Minor PAN Card Offline?

1. Download Form 49A:

Head over to the NSDL website (https://www.utiitsl.com/) and download Form 49A. This form is specifically designed for applying for a PAN card for an Indian citizen. This form is also available at any UTIITSL office or their agents.

4. Submit the Application:

Visit your nearest UTIITSL office. Submit the completed application form along with the required document copies and pay the processing fee.

5. Receive Acknowledgement:

Once you submit your application and fee, you'll be provided with an acknowledgement number. Keep this number for future reference as it allows you to track the application status.

6. PAN Card Delivery:

After successful verification and processing of your application, the PAN card will be mailed directly to the address mentioned in the form.

How to Update a Minor PAN Card After Becoming an Adult

Once a minor's PAN card becomes outdated (when they turn 18), they need to apply for a new regular PAN card.

Here's how to do it:

1. Fill out a form: You'll need a form called "Form 49A" (for Indian citizens) or "Form 49AA" (for foreigners). You can find these forms online or get them from an NSDL or UTIITSL centre. Fill out the form carefully and write in any new information, then sign it yourself.

2. Gather documents: Make copies of documents that show you are who you say you are and where you live. This could be your Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, or bank statement. Don't forget to include a couple of recent passport-sized photos.

3. Submit online or offline: You can either fill out the form online and then mail in some documents or submit everything in person at an NSDL or UTIITSL centre.

4. Pay the fee: The fee depends on where you live. It's ₹107 if your address is in India and ₹989 if it's outside India. You can usually pay online with a debit/credit card or net banking, or by sending a cheque.

5. Get an acknowledgement number: Once you submit your application and pay the fee, you'll get a special number. Keep track of this number because you can use it to check the status of your application later.

6. Receive your new PAN card: After your application is processed, your new adult PAN card with your photo and signature will be mailed to you.
