Introduction

India is a land of traditions and rich culture. But the status of women in our country, even in the 21st century, is in serious distress. Women are subject to many socio-evil practices like female infanticide, child marriages, domestic violence, etc which are a great peril to our society. The government of our country has therefore come out with many welfare schemes over the decades that strive for the betterment of the status of the women in the country. One such state government scheme is the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme.

The Bhagyashree Scheme is a welfare scheme initiated by the state government of Karnataka. This scheme aims at raising the status of females in the remotest parts of the state especially in the lower income groups that lack access to good education. The scheme provides financial assistance to the females of the state depending on their age group. The scheme aims to ultimately remove the stigma associated with the birth of a female child and promote their education to give them equal opportunities to thrive and make a better future for themselves and their families.

Objectives of the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme

Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme as mentioned above is a welfare scheme of the Karnataka State Government. It was initiated with a view to bring about a chance in the status of women in the state.

Given below are the objectives of the scheme.

  • Promote the birth of girl child in the state by removing the stigma attached to female births and reducing the cases of female infanticide.
  • Raise the status of women in their family and the society.
  • Providing financial assistance to the females belonging to the Below Poverty Line sections of the society.
  • Providing education to the females of the state up to standard 10.

Eligibility for Karnataka Bhagyashree Schemes

Karnataka Bhagyashree scheme is available to all the girls of the state if they meet the eligibility criteria set under the scheme.

Following are the details of the eligibility under the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme.

  • The girl should be a resident of the state of Karnataka.
  • The girl child should be born after March 31st 2006 to be eligible for the scheme.
  • Only two girls from a family are allowed to avail the benefits under the scheme.
  • The girl child has to be enrolled under the scheme within a period of one year from the time of the birth of the girl child.
  • A valid birth certificate has to be provided for such enrollment
  • The girl child has to be duly immunized as per the records of the Health Department of the State.
  • The girl child cannot be a child labourer to be eligible under the scheme.
  • The girl child should have completed her education up to class 8.
  • The girl child also has to be unmarried up to the age of 18 years to be eligible under the scheme.

Documents Required for Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme

The scheme requires the applicants to provide a specific set of documents that are needed to prove the eligibility of the applicant. These documents have to be submitted along with the application form of the scheme. If such documents are not submitted along with the application form then the application will not be considered complete and will not be approved for the benefits under the scheme.

Following are the list of documents that have to be submitted by the applicants under the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme.

  • Duly filled application form of the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme.
  • Birth certificate of the girl child.
  • Identity proof of the parents or the legal guardian of the girl child.

  • Below Poverty Line Card of the family that proves the eligibility of the girl child.
  • Bank Account details of the girl child to get direct benefit transfer.

Benefits Provided under the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme

Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme provides monetary benefits to the eligible girls belonging to the economically weaker section of the society. These monetary benefits are provided for the two purposes namely, education of the girl child as well as for many other purposes as mentioned below.

Other benefits

Other monetary benefits include various benefits like health insurance, compensation on account of accident or death of the girl child, etc.

The details of the benefits available under the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme are mentioned below.

  • Health insurance cover of up to Rs. 25,000 per month for the eligible girl child.
  • Accident cover of Rs. 1,00,000 received by the parents or the guardian of the eligible girl child on account accident of such girl
  • Compensation of Rs. 42,500 to the parents of the girl child on account of death of such girl.
  • The parents or the legal guardian of the eligible girl child will receive Rs. 34,751 after such girl completes the age of 18 years.

These monetary benefits are awarded to the eligible girl child only after they meet all the eligible criteria set under the scheme and after submitting the duly filled and signed application form along with the relevant documents as per the requirements mentioned under the scheme guidelines.

The application process of the Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme is kept very simple to ensure that it can be availed by maximum eligible applicants and can benefit them.
