Since its introduction in the 1960s, LPG has grown to become the most consumed domestic fuel in India. The LPG market in India is highly regularized and is predominantly distributed by 3 state owned companies viz. Indane, Bharatgas and HP Gas.
The government offers 12 subsidized cylinders to every household per year. These 3 gas companies have had a monopoly in the LPG sector. Of late, private players have slowly started occupying this market with their innovative products and services.
From age immemorial, consumers were made to stick with a single distributor. Except when they moved to a different house or another city, they were serviced by the same distributor for life. Consumers didn’t have much choice with the service part of LPG connection. There was no option to transfer their connection to another agency or gas company.
All this changed in 2013, when the Gas Companies joined hands together and propelled the LPG Portability in 24 districts across 13 States in October 2013.
About How To Transfer Gas Connection From One Gas Company To Another
Portability is an opportunity for a disgruntled consumer to shift to a dealer of their choosing, within a cluster of Indian Oil, HPC and BPC distributors. Customer's decision to move helps in holding distributors accountable for customer satisfaction and thereby enhancing customer experience.
The consumer has to send their application via the website, which is sent directly into a conversion phase often without the parent distributor's permission. The consumer may consequently complete the paperwork within the stipulated period at the new distributorship. This method removes the need to contact the dealer directly with a request for a transfer.
If you're just trying to change your current distributor and not the gas company, you can do that. You can find a list of distributors on the official website of your gas company that shows the location and rating of the distributor (1 star to 5 stars) based on delivery, refill and customer service. Once the list has been thoroughly checked, you can choose the distributor of your choice.
You can register online for the LPG services after selecting the right distributor. After registration, you will get an automated message confirming your registration and detailing the further steps to be taken in the process.
All you need to do is take a screenshot or print out of your email and visit the new distributor to complete the registration process. After that, this new dealer should fulfil your LPG cylinder orders, and your relationship with the old dealer should come to an end. The equipment, i.e. the cylinder and the pressure regulator, should be transferred or surrendered to the old distributor in order to obtain new equipment from the new distributor.
If you are not happy with your Gas company, you can transfer to one of the other two gas companies. You can do this online too. Before transferring your connection, you need to first surrender your cylinder, regulator or any other equipment with your gas company as it may not be compatible with the equipment of the new gas company.
One can follow the below steps to transfer their LPG connection to another Gas company;
