Aadhaar Card is an authenticated proof of identity issued by the Government of India. It can be used for using various services and schemes such as bank account, subsidies like LPG, insurance and so on. It includes the biometric, iris scan and facial recognition of a citizens. NPS keeps the records of all pensioners in our country. As a Government Employee, it is essential to open a new Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), also known as NPS. The maximum age for opening this account is now 65 years.

  • There are two types of pension schemes under NPS – Tier 1 and Tier 2.
  • In Tier 1 pension scheme, money cannot be withdrawn before the age of 60 years unless there is an exceptional circumstance.
  • In Tier 2 pension scheme, money can be withdrawn at any time. This can be utilized for major milestones in life like children’s education, marriage, purchase of property etc.
  • NRIs can also have the benefits of this pension scheme through regular deposits.
  • The minimum amount of contribution into NPS account is Rs. 6000 annually.
  • Tax benefits are available to the account holder after a minimum of Rs. 1.5 lacs are reflected in this account.
  • This account can be treated as a savings scheme as well to mitigate any unforeseen financial crisis.

There are simple steps to be followed to link Aadhaar Card to NPS Account online.

  • Firstly, one must open an NPS Account. The minimum amount to open NPS Account is Rs. 500 on a monthly basis till the age of 60 years. This amount is returned to the employee with interest after retirement.
  • Visit the official website of UIDAI and select Aadhaar Online Services.
  • Click on Aadhaar Address Update to link Aadhaar card with NPS Account.

Alternatively, one can link NPS Account to Aadhaar Card by visiting the official website of NPS with the following steps:

  • Go to the official website of NSDL (National Securities Deposit Limited). This is a central record keeping agency to link your NPS Account with the Aadhaar Card.
  • Click on Update Details.
  • Select Aadhaar/Edit option for entering the Aadhaar number.
  • You will receive OTP (One Time Password) on the registered mobile number at this stage. Enter the OTP.
  • Click Submit for linking NPS Account to Aadhaar Card.

There are some important points to be followed while linking Aadhaar Card to NPS Account and opening NPS Account.

  • Within 6 months of opening NPS account, one must send a printout of the newly opened account to CRA. This should be a signed copy for record-keeping. If this step is not completed in time, the newly opened account gets deactivated.
  • NPS Account must be linked with Aadhaar Card online and not by visiting the office.
  • For a senior Government employee, the process is limited to linking NPS account with Aadhaar Card. For a new Government employee, NPS Account must be opened first and then Aadhaar Card needs to be linked.
  • It is important to check if all personal details shared for Aadhaar Card and NPS Account are the same. If there is a discrepancy, it must be notified to the authorities for taking corrective action.
  • Most importantly, one must apply for Aadhaar Card if not already done.
