The Government of India has taken various measures to streamline the Income Tax filing process in the country. These measures are aimed at collecting the right amount of tax from liable individuals. Linking of PAN number with Aadhaar is one such measure. It has been made mandatory for all tax payers to link their PAN and Aadhaar before June 30th, 2020, or else their PAN will become inoperative. You will then be unable to use your PAN for any financial transactions which require PAN as mandatory.
About How to link Aadhaar Card and PAN Card
You can link your PAN and Aadhaar through the following ways:
Existing tax payers would already have a user ID & password for the e-filing website. They can login to the portal and follow these steps to link their PAN & Aadhaar:
If you are not registered on the e-filing website and do not wish to get registered just to link your PAN and Aadhaar, no worries, you can do that too.
Point to remember: While using online linking process, an OTP would be sent in case there is a mismatch in the name but date of birth and gender are matching. This OTP would be sent to the registered mobile number on your Aadhaar to verify and proceed with the linking process. However, users are advised to rectify any discrepancies in the name on PAN & Aadhaar before proceeding with the linking to avoid future problems.
If you are unable to use the department's e-filing website to link your PAN and Aadhaar then there are other ways to link PAN and Aadhaar. PAN and Aadhaar can be linked by sending a simple SMS. You can send an SMS to either of the PAN service providers, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITL).
You have to send a simple SMS in a specific format to either 567678 or 56161. The format is:
UIDPAN SPACE 12 digit Aadhaar SPACE 10 digit PAN
For example, if your Aadhaar number is 123412341234 and PAN is ABCDP5678Q. Then you are required to send an SMS in the below format to 567678 or 56161
UIDPAN 123412341234 ABCDP5678Q
This service is free of charge. However, your mobile operator may charge you for the SMS as per your rental plan.
Manual linking of PAN & Aadhaar using Form (Annexure – I)
CBDT has also provided a manual method to link your PAN & Aadhaar in case of discrepancies in name on both these documents. This method helps uses to sort out any information mismatch on their PAN & Aadhaar so that they can link them without any issues.
The Income Tax Department is continually urging citizens to link their PAN and Aadhaar before the stipulated deadline. It is now mandatory to link your PAN & Aadhaar without fail.
In case you do not link your PAN & Aadhaar before the deadline, the IT Department has announced that, it will become ‘inoperative’. You will be unable to use your PAN financial transactions like bank account opening, investment in a fixed deposit, income tax returns, etc. An Inoperative PAN effectively means that the person does not have a PAN.
So, what will happen if you miss the deadline and link it on a later date?
CBDT has issues a notification on February 13th, 2020 to this effect. PAN will become operational again from the date on which PAN is linked to Aadhaar. For example, if you have not linked your PAN & Aadhaar by June 30th, 2020, it will become inoperative on July 1st, 2020. If you then go and complete the linking on July 15th, 2020, your PAN will once again become operative from this date.
