Features and Benefits of HDFC Fixed Deposits

  • HDFC FDs come with attractive interest rates

  • HDFC FD interest rates are fixed when you open the deposit, and the rate depends on the tenure of the deposit.

  • HDFC fixed deposits have flexible tenures ranging from 7 days to 10 years

  • You can take a loan against an HDFC FD in the form of an overdraft, and you can get upto 90% of the FD amount.

  • Senior citizens get a bonus interest rate of 0.50% p.a. over regular rates.

  • The minimum amount needed to open a fixed deposit with HDFC Bank is Rs. 5000.

  • If you prematurely withdraw within 7 days of opening the account, you won’t receive any interest on the deposit.

  • The bank provides a nomination facility.

  • The Super Saver FD of HDFC Bank allows a sweep-in facility that enables customers to complete transactions even if they don’t have enough balance in their FD accounts.

  • You can earn compound interest by reinvesting the principal along with the interest amount accrued on the FD.

How to Compute the Maturity Value and the Interest on HDFC FD?

The maturity value on the HDFC FD is computed as follows:

M = P (1 + r/n) ^ n*t

Here,

M = Maturity value

P = initial deposit amount

R = interest rate

N = the frequency at which the interest rate applicable is compounded.

T = duration of the investment

Let us take an example: Say you are investing an amount of Rs. 8000 for 8 years at an interest rate of 5% compounded quarterly. Then the HDFC FD’s maturity amount is calculated as

M = 8000(1 + 5/100/4)^4*8

= 8000(1 + 0.05/4)^32

= 11905.04

The investment amount = Rs. 8000

Therefore interest earned on deposit = 11905.04 - 8000

= 3905.04

Computing the values of maturity amount and interest accrued takes time when done manually. So, it is ideal to use CreditMantri’s HDFC Fixed Deposit Calculator to do it.

Note : The values of maturity amount and interest earned may vary slightly across different online calculators and also with the value derived from manual computation.
