Gruha Jyothi scheme offers up to 200 units of free electricity to all residential households in Karnataka. Launched in August 2023, eligible applicants can register on the Seva Sindhu portal to avail this scheme.
The Govt. of Karnataka launched the ‘Gruha Jyothi’ scheme in August 2023 that promises free electricity of up to 200 units to all eligible residential households in Karnataka. Applicants can apply for this scheme both online and offline. And once approved, electricity bills with less than 200 units consumption will be marked as ‘ZERO Bills’ and the consumer doesn’t have to pay any bill.
This scheme could potentially benefit lakhs of households that have minimal electricity usage. However, if your electricity bill for any particular month exceeds the 200 units, you won’t be eligible for the zero bill that month and you need to pay the entire bill amount.
Who are eligible for the Gruha Jyothi scheme by Karnataka Government?
- The Gruha Jyothi scheme covers all eligible residential households within Karnataka whose average monthly consumption is less than 200 units.
- Your average monthly consumption for the F.Y. 2022-23 should have been less than 200 units.
- Average electricity consumption is calculated as - Average units consumed between April 2022 to March 2023 + 10% increase.
Free Electricity Benefits under the Gruha Jyothi Scheme
The scheme promises free electricity for households with average electricity consumption less than 200 units. This is how it’s calculated –
1. Monthly usage is less than Average Units calculated – ZERO Bill; you don’t need to pay anything.
2. Monthly usage is more than Average Units calculated but less than 200 units – You pay only for the units exceeding average units.
3. Monthly usage is more than 200 units – you need to pay the entire bill for that month.
Gruha Jyothi Scheme Average Units and Free Units Calculation
- Average consumption for F.Y. 2022-23 – 150 units
- +10% increase – 165 units
- So, you are eligible for 165 units of free electricity every month
Now, let’s see how the bill will be calculated –
- Free units eligible – 165 units
- October usage – 163 units: Bill amount = ZERO
- November usage – 180 units; Bill amount = 180-165 = 15 units
- December usage – 210 units; Bill amount – pay for whole 210 units

How to apply for Gruha Jyothi Scheme Online?
1. Go to the Seva Sindhu Portal.2. Click on ‘Gruha Jyothi’ option.
3. You will be redirected to an application form for the scheme.
4. Enter your electricity supply company, connection number, name, address, Aadhaar number, mobile number and a few other details.5. You need to check the declaration and enter the Captcha code before clicking submit.
6. An acknowledgement number is sent to you. Please save it for further application tracking.

Can I apply for the Gruha Jyothi Scheme offline?
Applicants who don’t have the facility to apply online on the Seva Sindhu portal can apply offline at their nearest branches of Grama One, Karnataka One, and Bangalore One centres.
