The BSR (Basic Statistical Returns) code is a unique 7-digit identification code assigned to bank branches in India by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The first three digits represent the bank and the next 4 digits represent the branch. The code is used to file TDS and TCS returns. The BSR system alerts the income tax department for payments done through banks. 

Code Usage

BSR codes are used in the following documents. They are

  • TDS Certificates
  • In the Challan Identification Number (CIN)
  • In OLTAS challan and in deducting details.

How Are The Codes Classifed?

The codes are BSR1, BSR2, BSR3, BSR4, BSR5, BSR6, and BSR7

BSR1

This code is designed to analyze the semi-annual returns on advances originating from all branches of the bank, specifically on the final Friday of June and December. This process comprises two distinct segments: the initial segment caters to accounts with limits exceeding Rs. 10,000, while the subsequent part is tailored for accounts with limits below Rs. 10,000.

BSR2

This code is applicable on return deposits half yearly to all branches of the bank on the last Friday of June and December. 

BSR3

This is applicable to the monthly return advances against the security of a few chosen sensitive commodities from head offices on the last Friday of every month. 

BSR 4

This is applicable to the Return on Ownership of Bank Deposits belonging to all branches on the last Friday of March. This is applied once in every 2 months. 

BSR 5

This is applicable to the yearly return on bank investments from the Head Office on the last day of March.

BSR 6

This is applicable to the Quinquennial Survey on Debits to Deposits Accounts. It is done from April to March.

BSR 7

This is  applicable for the Survey on Aggregate Deposits and Gross Bank Credit by head offices of the bank on the last Friday of June, September, and December, and on March 31. It is done quarterly. 

What Are The Uses of BSR Codes?

  • BSR Codes help the international tax authorities to track the payment done by an individual to an overseas country. 
  • BSR codes assist senior citizens to obtain pensions earlier and also collects all the information about the branch of a bank. 
  • BSR codes are used by the income tax department to obtain and collect information. They record taxes that are paid through the banks and upload the details of the challan.
