The ESI Act of 1948 was India's first major social security legislation for workers, providing protection against sickness, maternity, disability, and occupational diseases, as well as injuries related to employment. Inaugurated on February 24, 1952, by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the ESIC scheme ensures health and financial security to employees so that they are given a feeling of dignity and support during times of distress. Gradually, the scheme has expanded to cover several workers and their families across the nation.

ESIC is a service mandated for non-seasonal factories and businesses, employing more than 10 employees-with some states enhancing the threshold limit to 20 employees-earning a basic wage of Rs. 21,000 or less per month, while it is Rs.25,000 for PWDs (persons with disabilities).

Employers should register new employees within 15 days of joining. Employers would contribute 3.25% of the employee's monthly wages to the scheme, and the employee contributes 0.75%. Employees earning less than Rs.176 a day are exempt from contributing.
