The e-Shram Yojna was started by the government to provide social security to people working in the unorganised sector. An online e-Shram portal is also created for the same. This portal was launched by the government on 26 August 2021. The main purpose of launching this portal is to collect the data of the workers in the unorganised sector and to provide them with the benefits of schemes offered by the government.

To date, more than 25 crore workers have registered on the portal! It is completely free of cost to register and the workers don’t have to pay anything to access the benefits. The benefits offered to them include pension after 60 years of age, financial aid in case of incapacity, life insurance, and more.

In this guide, we’ll have a look at all the details you need to know about the e-Shram card, including eligibility, registration, benefits, and how to download the e-Shram card.

What is an e-Shram Card?

e-Shram is a new program launched to provide a safety net for people who work in the unorganised sector (odd jobs or informal jobs without regular employers). It's like a big list of all these workers, and registering for e-Shram gives you a card that makes it easier to access benefits from the government.

These benefits can be things like money for when you retire or help with medical bills. Anyone from 16 to 59 years old who works as a day labourer or other informal jobs can sign up for e-Shram, but it's important to note that you can't already be part of other government programs for workers like EPFO or ESIC.

The unorganised sector consists of jobs where there are small businesses with less than 10 people. These jobs often don't have the same benefits as bigger companies. Examples of unorganised workers include people who work from home, are self-employed or do day labour. The important thing is that they don't get benefits like health insurance (ESIC) or retirement savings (EPFO) that some other jobs might offer.
