Driving License Forms in India

To drive a vehicle legally on the roads, an Indian driving license is mandatory. However, to obtain a driving license there is a separate process to it and the license is not received right away.

An individual wanting to drive any type of motor vehicle in India has to get their learning license first. A learner’s license is required for learning. A person has to appear for a test before an RTO authority, who after proper examination, will declare if the person has passed the examination or not. Such an examination is held after a month’s time after the issue of a learning license.

Features of a Genuine Driving License

There are certain features in a driving license that you could look out to find out if a license is genuine or fake. The main feature that could help differentiate the same are:

  • The photograph of the license holder, also makes it an eligible identity proof.
  • A unique registration number is issued by the assigned issuing authority.
  • The name of the office of the authority generating and issuing it.
  • The rubber stamp and name of the issuing officer of the RTO.

Driving License Renewal Online

Your Driving License must be up to date and if not, you should apply for renewal and can even apply in the grace period for such renewal. You are required to pay a higher fee if not renewed within the grace period, which is 30 days after your license expires. An application for renewal shall be entertained not more than a month after the date of expiry of the license. However, if more than 5 years have elapsed since the expiry of a license, the applicant is required to undergo all the formalities for obtaining a fresh license.

Documents Required for Driving License

For ensuring no delays in the application process, the documents submitted are required to be valid and correct. The list of documents required for obtaining a driving license is as follows:

1. Age proof (Any of the following)

  • Birth Certificate
  • PAN Card
  • Passport
  • Marksheet of 10th class.

2. Address proof

3. Current Address Proof:

  • Rental Agreement and Electricity Bill
  • Rental Agreement with LPG Bill

Other Requirements for a Driving License

  • A Duly filled Application Form ( To be downloaded from the online portal or obtained from the RTO office)
  • Passport size photographs as specified when applying for a Learner’s license.
  • 1 Passport size photograph when applying for a Driver’s License.
  • Application fees
  • A copy of a utility bill and a Rental Agreement.
  • A Medical Certificate- Form 1A, certified by a certified Government doctor.
  • A medical certificate for all applicants over 40 years of age.

Duplicate Driving License in India

Driving LIcense is an important document in India as it gives citizens the right to drive and also acts as valid identity proof. If anyone loses their driving license, they can apply for a Duplicate Driving License from the RTO by filling out an application form and submitting it with the required documents.

How to Apply for a Driving License?

You can apply for a Driving License either through the official Government website or by visiting the nearest RTO office. It is also worth noting that a learner’s license is not a prerequisite for applying for a driver’s license. The only condition for eligibility is that the applicant is 18 years of age and above that, and he has knowledge of traffic rules and regulations required for the issue of a license.

Other than a Driving License Application Form, there are other forms related to getting a Driving License. Some of the forms are listed below:

Application Form for License to Drive a Motor Vehicle (Form 4)

Some of the categories included in an application form are:

Vehicle type - This is an important part of an application as it informs the RTO of the type of vehicle the license will be used for. Some of the types are motorcycles with gears, motorcycles without gears, light motor vehicles or transport vehicles.

Applicant details - This part of the form includes the details of the applicant such as full name, permanent address, Date of Birth, Marital Status, place of birth etc.

If the applicant held a License previously - If the applicant has held a license previously, the details should be provided.

If the applicant has already given a driving test - The applicant should provide the details of the driving test along with the results of the test. The applicant also needs to provide other documentation such as the learner’s license, certificate of medical fitness, photographs and application fees. The date of application is also required to be mentioned along with the signature of the applicant. Also, the applicant is required to submit the driving test results as a part of the Certificate of Test Competence to Drive.

Application Form for Grant or Renewal of Driving License (Form 2)

Anyone intending to apply for a new Driving License or renewal of an existing license needs to correctly fill in Form 2. Some of the details that are required are the name of the applicant, Date of Birth, educational qualifications, and blood group among others.A fitness certificate should also be provided to ensure that the applicant is fit enough to drive a vehicle. The form also needs to be signed by the applicant.

Form for Application for Renewal of Driving License

All Driving Licenses issued in India have a fixed period of validity before their Expiry. Form 9 is designed for applicants wanting to renew their Driving License. This form requires the name of the applicant, Date of Birth, licensing authority and date of issue of the driver’s license. Applicants are also required to state the class and type of vehicle for which they want to renew their driving license. Also, a declaration that the applicant’s license is not revoked or disqualified is necessary. Lastly, the applicant is also required to include the expired driving license with the application form.

Application for Duplicate Learning License (Form L.L.D.)

This form is applicable to those who have lost or misplaced their driver’s license. This form informs the RTO that the license of the applicant has been misplaced. It should include details like the name of the applicant, name of the issuing authority, temporary or permanent license, address, father/ mother/guardian name and the reason for such loss. The applicant also requires the signature of the applicant.

Medical Certificate (Form 1A)

All driver's license applications are required to submit Form 1A also called the Medical Certificate with Physical Fitness Certificate along with the application form. The first part includes the name of the applicant along with any identification mark. The second part requires the applicant to declare that they are suffering from any ailment including night blindness, memory loss or any deformity that can stop a person from driving safely. The third section includes the blood group of the applicant. The form should be signed by a medical officer and should declare that the applicant is fit to drive a vehicle.
