Surrendering a PAN card upon the death of a person

If an individual cardholder has deceased, the relatives can write a letter to the respective jurisdiction’s Income Tax officer requesting to surrender the PAN card. Mention the reason along with the details of the deceased PAN cardholder such as his name, PAN card number, date of birth etc, and death certificate.

How and why to cancel an active PAN card?

PAN cards act as identity proof and are the required document to file taxes therefore it is better to not surrender the PAN card that is active. In instances where the individual will be relocating out of India and will not be paying taxes to the Indian government or will no longer be involved in any financial transactions within the country, the PAN card can be surrendered. This can be done by the same process of writing a letter to the Income Tax assessing officer of their respective jurisdiction. Once the PAN card is cancelled, the physical copy can be surrendered to the Income tax office.
