Online Process for EPF Nominee Updation
Every time you want to nominate a new person, you have to again add the details of the previous nominee along with the details of the new person to keep both of them as nominees. This is because upon nominating a new person, the details of the existing nominee will get overridden by the newly added nominee’s details. For instance, if you have already nominated your spouse and are going to add your child as a nominee. Then you should add the details of your spouse once again along with the child.
However, if you want to change the nominee or update any details of the already existing nominee, you can directly change the nominee or update the details. You don’t have to delete the details of the old member in this case. The EPFO will consider only the details of the newly added nominee and the old nominee is regarded as invalid. Actually, you cannot delete the old nominations. They will be stored on the EPFO portal. However, they will be considered invalid when new nominations are added.
EPFO Nomination Rulees
- The EPF account holder can nominate one or more than one person for their EPF account.
- If there is more than one nominee, the account holder needs to add a proportionate share for each nomination. When the account holder dies, the nominees will receive the amount according to the proportion.
- The account holder can nominate only family members, which includes spouse, children, and parents, Siblings and other members are not regarded as family members according to the EPFO nomination rules.
- However, there is an exception to (3). If the account holder does not have a family at the time of nomination, he/she can nominate anybody close to him/her. However, once the account holders get a family, they can nominate only a family member. If the nominee is a minor, the guardian must be a family member
- If the account holder dies, the maturity amount from the EPF account should be paid to the registered nominee. Further, the payment will be made based on the proportion of shares allocated by the account holder.
- If there is no nomination, the maturity amount will be distributed equally amongst the family members. However, the distribution of the amount happens based on specific terms and conditions.
Conclusion
It is often essential for the account holder to make nominations for EPF. Otherwise, there may be a tiff amongst the family members as to who should receive what amount. The process of nomination for EPF is now very simple since you can just go to the official website of EPFO and make the nomination.
